Charterhouse: tax efficient can also be tax compliant

PRESS RELEASE: CHARTERHOUSE GROUP INTERNATIONAL

It has been 6 months since Charterhouse Group International Plc introduced new joining procedures for all of their services following consultation with HM Revenue and Customs and Ernst & Young. As a result of these consultations Charterhouse developed processes and procedures that were reviewed by the Revenue to meet established case law status tests.

These new processes have been designed to take away, from Recruitment Companies and Freelance Contractors many of the risks and responsibilities associated with limited company working, at a time when the Revenue is focusing in on the use of limited companies by contract and temporary workers (temps).

By the 01st October 2005 all temps using Charterhouse will have completed a Contract Status Questionnaire (CSQ) to determine whether they are legitimately working inside or outside IR35 regulations. Working status is determined both by the CSQ and by the contract that is in place with the agency. Charterhouse have been working closely with all of their Business Partners to ensure that they have suitable contracts in place were possible. These contracts are not just for taxation issues but to ensure that Recruitment Companies and end clients are properly protected. The completion date for this process is the 01st October 2005. We now have a product suitable for every type of freelance contractor.

Contractors can even be signed up to the service on the same day if all details are confirmed by 3pm via a consultant application or direct contractor telephone application on freephone number 0800 634 4848.

Lisa Underwood, Head of Isle of Man Sales and Marketing today commented “The launch of these new processes in April helped to secure our position as the leader of the field in terms of compliance. Many of our competitors continue to bury their heads in the sand with regard to risk and responsibility. At Charterhouse we take responsibility seriously and go the extra mile. Our Group Tax Manager Mark Bale MSc CTA and Group Legal Manager David Watts MA FCIS are not only a resource to us but work with our Recruitment Company Business Partners to ensure compliance. We are confidant that our business partners and contractors enjoy all of the benefits of limited company working together with peace of mind that they are operating in an manner which would meet the approval of the revenue. In August of 2005 we surveyed 6000 of our temporary workers and received a fantastic response. Of the completed questionnaires 85% rated the service as either excellent (34%) or good (51%). “

Many service providers will offer apparently ‘IR35 friendly’ services to temps, which would not stand up against a Revenue investigation. Through Charterhouse, temps can be sure that while they reap the rewards of contracting they don’t receive benefits which they are not legitimately eligible for and consequently fail a Revenue investigation.

Commercial Director, Nerys Roberts said, “There has been a great deal of mistrust in the market place regarding limited company working. We felt that, as a market-leader, it was important for us to tackle this issue head on. We have therefore purposefully collaborated with the HM Revenue and Customs in order to meet the market needs in providing services, which can offer genuine peace of mind to both our customers and business partners.” The only revenue a contractor or business partner of Charterhouse needs to worry about therefore is all of the extra money they will be making.
