Beware all small businesses.
Unscrupulous companies are attempting to trick firms into paying more than necessary to register under the Data Protection Act.
Headed letters have been sent to many businesses, asking for £95 for registration under the Data Protection Act. This is £60 more than the official fee.
Most businesses processing personal data are required by law to notify the Information Commissioner, but the fee is only £35. Many small businesses that process personal data for limited purposes are not required to give notification at all.
You can find out a full list of the companies attempting the scam on the Government Data Protection web Site.
