In an online survey of freelancers undertaken by the Professional Contractors Group (PCG) during summer last year, over 40 per cent of respondents said that they found it difficult to take holidays. According to some of the other findings, being a freelancer is not all plain sailing:
- 39 per cent of respondents have cancelled holidays because of unexpected work or the size of their workload
- Fewer than 25 per cent manage not to think about work whilst on holiday
- 78 per cent admit that they take work-related calls on holiday, although some will take urgent calls only
- Nearly 47 per cent take a PDA, laptop or other mobile device on holiday, or make sure that they have access to webmail, so that they can check their emails
- 15 per cent have lost business as a result of being on holiday and a further 28 per cent think they may have done
